Before the early birds

by Mary on August 16, 2011 · 20 comments

What in the world possessed me to wake up before the butt crack of dawn this morning? NightAnd then drive through pitch-blackness with heavy eyes wishing I was still tucked soundly in my bed?

Why, why, whyyy did I offer to pick up a 6AM yoga class 20 minutes away?

Oh right, it’s yoga at an MMA place! How cool! NightNot!

Not when being greeted by a totally shut-down building, empty parking lot, and locked doors.

Ugh.

Strike 3, MMA place! Two strikes for nobody showing up, and a third for the gas wasted driving there and back twice.

It might have been fun to teach there, but it’s not worth making the drive with no guarantee anybody’s going to show up. Sure, their schedule may be new, but showing up without a single soul there (when there should have been another class at 5AM, too) is a bit ridiculous.

I’ll stick with the gym, thank you very much.  At least their schedule’s actually organized!

Oh well…on the upside, it gave me an extra hour to get today’s training run done before the sun came up!

On the downside, I was so tired from the early wake up, lacing up my sneakers was that last thing on my mind.

On the upside, my body doesn’t listen to my mind.RunningWhile my mind was busy begging for sleep, my fingers were tying my shoes and my legs were walking out the door. Before my mind caught on as to what was happening, I was ready to run!

Works for me.

On the schedule today was a 4 mile easy @ 9:59.  And by the end…Garmin4 miles on the dot averaging an 8:33 min/mile!! Open-mouthed smile

  • Mile 1- 8:43
  • Mile 2- 8:27
  • Mile 3- 8:33
  • Mile 4- 8:29

Yeahhh! Since training started, the easy runs have been anything but easy. But this one was different. It was smooth sailing once my head finally woke up!

Breakfast

My mind may have finally decided to wake up, but it had a hard time settling on what to have for breakfast. Protein cake, pancakes, eggs..?OatmealOatmeal. Good choice!OatmealIn the mix:

  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 1 T wheat bran
  • 1 T soy flour
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/4 cup milk + some water
  • salt & cinnamon
  • frozen peach & banana added before cooking
  • 1 T cottage cheese & Tropical Fruit Carbmaster stirred in at the end

Topped with chocolate Newman’s Own cookies and Dark Chocolate Dreams.OatmealYoga drive down, run done, breakfast eaten..and all before 9AM.

Wow. I’ll admit, as much as it stinks getting up super early, it really does feel nice to get so much done before most people even wake up!  Maybe I should start making this a habit?

…nahhh. Winking smile

Have a wonderful day and talk to you soon!

I love how it feels like you have so much more time in the day when you wake up early, but I never get to bed early enough the night before to not crash halfway through the day!

I’m definitely an early bird, although that seems REALLY early! Haha. I just love the satisfaction of being up and working while all the rest of the world is asleep. I’ve gotten a jump start on the day and it’s calm and peaceful.

Good for you getting the run in early! I’m such a night owl…I can’t get up early if I have to!

I’m totally a morning person, but I have a tendency to lose my motivation if something goes wrong – like no one at yoga. Great job keeping your motivation up despite that little set-back and getting in such a speedy run!

“the butt crack of dawn” – that just had me in stiches, brilliant!
Not so brilliant that you got up that early and drove all that way for nothing, nightmare :-(

bummer about the MMA place but it seems like they just don’t have it together! sheesh. Great job on the run today :) I’m definitely an early bird. I always have been!

Early morning person for sure, but I would have been so annoyed if that happened! Great job on the run though, awesome stats :)

Awwr that sucks big time :( Even though I’m an early bird and naturally wake up around 5 – 5:30, I’d definitely be ticked off at dragging my butt out of the house and no one showing up. But I do love waking up early because, you’re right, it makes the day seem so much longer and more productive.

I’ll state the obvious…I don’t like the idea you were alone in a dark parking lot with a locked building at 6 am. MMA owes you an apology.

Fortunately there actually happened to be a cop that parked there for a few minutes. He was probably making sure I wasn’t breaking in but it was comforting, too.

Early bird all the way!! I don’t love waking up when it’s dark, but the days I do and exercise before work make my whole day a little happier :)

Early morning bird, when I sleep in (which is rare), I feel like so much of my day has been missed out on. Morning are peaceful too me, a huge part of keeping me sane :P
Sorry about the MMA, that is ridiculous! But your run (HOLEY FREAKING FAST!) and your breakfast totally made up for that :)

It’s so frustrating to wake up early, get yourself psyched up and arrive to locked doors! At least you made the most of your early morning wake up :)

Early bird for sure! I love waking up before the rest of normal people do, especially being on the road because it’s so peaceful. Maybe I’m the only crazy one though…
Good job on your run! Sometimes the best runs happen when we’re least expecting them.
